Apologies to Sir Cliff! Recently there have been numerous reasons for flag-waving, personal and community pride, and general happiness. Somewhat unusually, a parade went past the end of my road a few Sundays ago. The pavements were lined with cheering locals and visitors, all ages and backgrounds, mixed in joyous celebration, the television cameras whirred and there was much excitement. The reason for this outpouring of spontaneous gaiety was not, I must confess, my latest piece of writing for PN but something far more momentous – the journey of the Olympic torch, passing through Devon on the second day of its journey across the UK.
